My research report was done on understanding the lasting effects of racial inequality in South Africa following the dismantling of the apartheid system. In my paper,I discussed that even though apartheid officially ended in 1994, the legacy of that system lingers in many ways but especially in the form of deeply rooted social and economic disparities. Black South Africans, who make up the majority population, still have to face challenges related to land ownership, uneven access to quality education, and limited upward mobility. These inequalities are not only historical reminders but also affect the current intergroup relations and shape the country's social and political atmosphere. To analyze this issue deeper, I chose the Race Conflict Theory, which is something we learned earlier in the class and is a perspective within the broader conflict theory framework that hones in on how racial hierarchies and competition for resources perpetuate inequality. The theory shows how the dominant racial group often maintains advantages, while subordinated groups experience marginalization. In the case of South Africa, Race Conflict Theory helps explain the persistence of inequality, even after formal laws have changed, by showing that deep power dynamics cannot be easily undone through legislation alone and more must done to change this.
