A gourmet oil shop, sells three blends of olive oil-basil-pepper, mint-pepper, basil-mint-pepper. They use three types of oil to make the three blends. Although the recipes for the three blends are not fully precise, certain "golden rules of oil blending" must be satisfied when combining the three types: • Basil-pepper should contain no more than 22% of basil (by weight). • Mint-pepper should contain at least 68% of pepper and mint combined (by weight). • Basil-mint-pepper should contain at least 33% of pepper (by weight). Furthermore, there is limited availability of the three types of oil. The maximum weekly availability of basil, pepper, and mint oils are 9000 lbs, 8,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, respectively and weekly processing capability of the company is 35,000 lbs. To satisfy the weekly needs of the customers, at least 5500 lbs of basil-pepper should be prepared. Given that the three types cost 1.20$, 1.30$ and 1.10$ per lb respectively and the selling price for the blends are 3$, 3.20$ and 2.80$ per lb respectively, the manager would like to know the number of lbs of each type to be used in each blend in order to maximize profit. Formulate a linear programming problem to help the manager. You must specify the interpretation of your decision variables, write the objective, and the constraints.
