Acme Enterprises makes widgets. Widgets are needed by nearly everyone for both personal, business, and military uses. Acme has three manufacturing sites; a HQ where marketing and sales offices are as well as HR. A fifth site is solely for r&d. Nearly 1200 people work for Acme. HQ is in Asheville with 200 employees, with the R&D plant employing 100 or so scientists being in the research triangle near Raleigh. The three manufacturing sites employ 300 each and are in Waynesville, Charlotte, and Wilmington. Gross sales run around $785 million per year; it is a closely-held company with all the shares owned by the Gilmore family. Lois Gilmore is the CEO and her great grandfather Cyrus founded the company in 1914 to aid the war effort.

1. You are V.P. for Sales for Acme Enterprises in the Asheville. William is a long time employee (15+ years inthe Asheville office) ) who is undergoing some rough times. His wife has left him and his children have moved away to college. He is, though, your most productive employee. However, co-workers are complaining of problems in working with William and customers/clients are complaining as well. It appears that William does not realize he has a sever drinking problem. Williams supervisor says that she can have someone replace William and up and running within a three week period. Do you fire William and replace him? The company can afford a rehab program for him, but it will be costly and time-consuming (4-8 months); the company cannot afford to keep William on and hire a new employee. If you send him to rehab, other members of his sales team will have to take up the slack created by his absence.
