Activity $10-6$: Creating Web Pages with HTML

$1)$ If the terminal window is still open, switch to the root user. If you don$$t have a terminal window open or if

VMware Player isn$$t running, follow Step $1$ in Activity $10-1.$

$2)$ Change to the directory designated to hold Web pages $($DocumentRoot$)$ by typing cd $/$srv$/$www$/$htdocs

and pressing Enter. This is the default DocumentRoot directory. Explain how you can change the

DocumentRoot directory

$3)$ To create and edit a new HTML file, type vim homepage.html and press Enter.

$4)$ Switch to insert mode by typing i$.$ Type and press Enter.

$5)$ Type and press Enter.

$6)$ Specify your name as the Web page title by typing First$\_$Name Last$\_$Name $($substituting

your own first and last names$).$ When you$$re done, press Enter, and then type and press Enter.

$7)$ To start the body section, type and press Enter

$8)$ Type This is my Web page and press Enter.

$9)$ To allow users to click a link to get back to the index.html page, type Click here to go back to the main page! and press Enter. What would have happened

if you had omitted the tag?

$10)$ To end the body section, type and press Enter.

$11)$ Type $.$ Your HTML code should look like the following:

Click here to go back to the main page!

$12)$ Save the script by entering last line mode and typing wq$!$

$13)$ To edit the index.html file so that you can click a link to access the homepage.html file, type vim

index.html and press Enter.

$14)$ When the index.html file opens in vim, clean up the display to make it look like Figure $10-9,$ shown

previously.

$15)$ Display line numbers by typing set nu and pressing Enter.

$16)$ Move the cursor to line $4,$ type i to switch to insert mode, and press Enter.

$17)$ Move the cursor to line $4$ and type Click here to go to your Web

page! Now save the file, which should look like the following:
