Activity # 3-Async Students Only - For Async students only (replaces Activity #3, Part A and Pat B which was completed by the in-person students during class)

Mary Popwell - is the senior Project Manager for the Municipal Bridge Improvement Project, which has been awarded to her consulting company, Hope Consulting. Hope Consulting is acting as the principal designers and project managers for the city. In addition to the engineering challenge that was discussed in Activity# 3 Parts A & B, remember that this project is politically sensitive.

Background: On her way to the office, Mary passed Dan Jones, her Senior Structural Engineer. In response to her cherry "Good Morning", Dan slams his file cabinet shut and turning towards her says, "That Dave Johnson is a pain. I've worked with the guy before and he just won't listen." Somewhat taken aback, Mary watches as Dan walks off to his office and closes the door.

Shortly, Mary's assistant, Jim, enters her office. He advises her that he's received a phone call from the job site stating the project downtown is blowing up. The ironworkers were threatening to walk off the job because the painters were spraying lead-based paint adjacent to their work space causing a potential health hazard. The General Contractor, although responsible for both the painters and the ironworkers, said he was following Mary's schedule and the problem was a result of their (Hope Consulting's) oversight. Mary knew that the iron workers operations were critical to the schedule and that daily cost in labor is approximately ten times that of the painting sub-contractor.

Turning on her radio, Mary learns from the morning news that protestors are picketing in the area. One of the protestors mentions to the news reporter that they plan on picketing at the Municipal Bridge until their demands are met. This could threaten to shut down the entire job site for days.

Mulling these events over, Mary opens her first morning e-mail. It's an e-mail from the City Quality Engineer assigned to oversee the project. The Engineer states in the e-mail that the concrete poured on the approach ramp the previous week is substandard and will have to be removed. This is a serious problem and will likely delay the project by two weeks. In addition, removing and replacing the ramp would cause a large budget overrun.

Mary reaches for the aspirin in her desk drawer and walks down the hall to the coffee machine. It looks like it's going to be a busy day.
