After reading the article, answer these questions:
(Topic) What is the topic of the article? What are sub-topics that you might include in an outline? (To help you visualize the organization, think of or draw out a topic map similar to what we used in the past.)
(Narrowed Topic) If you were using the article to help you narrow the topic, what narrowed topics might you consider and which one would you choose?
(General Purpose) What is the General Purpose for this speech? (In a speech to persuade, the General Purpose is: To persuade.Write that as your answer to #3.)
(Specific Purpose) The hardest step is designing your Specific Purpose. First ask yourself what you want to change. Do you want to change what drivers do? Or do you want to change the rules for driving? Or do you want to change the technology installed in automobiles?
If you want to change what your audience does, what exactly do you think they need to do to be safer when driving? Is there new technology they should install or use? What is this technology and what should they do to have it available when driving? These are specific ways for your audience members to take action.
If you want to change the technical or environmental elements in driving, who should do what to make those changes? Should the government make changes? Should automobile manufacturers make changes? Should tech companies make changes?
Write your specific purpose.
Your specific purpose will follow a pattern similar to this one:to persuade my audience that they should __(do something specific)___.
Or
To persuade my audience that ___(a government or societal organization)_______should____(do something)____.(a government entity, a group, an administrator, etc. should take specific action).
(Credibility) What can you do to show that your reasons for advocating this purpose are credible? (See p.121) Why are you interested in the topic? What is your personal experience with the topic as a driver? Have you earned any certificates or degrees in this area? How have you prepared for the presentation, what research have you conducted? How can you show your enthusiasm for the topics, your confidence in the material and sources you will present?
(Significance to Audience) How will your audience benefit from taking the action you will present? Or you might share statistics comparing how statistics of injury improve when changes you want are in place. You can use some of the significance mentioned in the article here. Just be sure they align with your exact purpose and you address your audience directly, letting them know how this topic is important to them.
