Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing many aspects of daily life, including how we work, communicate, and learn. It has become embedded in various platforms we use regularly, appearing in workplace tools, word processing applications, search engines, smartphones, and even in shopping apps like Walmart and Amazon. In the field of education, AI is revolutionizing the delivery of content and the way students engage with learning materials (Tiwari, 2024). One such tool is HealthStream's Jane AI, a patented, AI-driven platform designed to personalize competency development and assess clinical judgment in nurses. I currently serve as a Senior Program Editor, working directly on the Jane team, where I contribute to the development and refinement of the Jane AI model. This role provides me with firsthand insight into how Jane operates and the impact it can have on nurse competency and education.

Jane AI leverages advanced algorithms to analyze data from clinical assessments and simulations. This enables it to identify both strengths and areas for improvement, allowing for highly targeted learning interventions (HealthStream, 2021). Educators can utilize Jane AI to significantly enhance curriculum development and student learning. First, it allows for the creation of personalized learning plans tailored to individual students based on their assessment outcomes. This adaptive approach moves away from a one-size-fits-all model and instead fosters targeted educational experiences that address specific learning needs. Additionally, Jane AI provides educators with valuable data-driven insights into student performance. This information helps instructors identify common areas of difficulty among learners and revise course content accordingly (Gore, 2024). We have partnered with several nursing schools that are utilizing this tool to identify competency gaps in their last-year nursing students.

From the student's perspective, Jane AI offers opportunities for self-assessment and personalized skill development. It evaluates their clinical judgment skills. Through Jane, students receive immediate, individualized feedback and learning modules that support improvement in real time. This not only enhances confidence but also supports more effective study habits.

While Jane AI brings many benefits, it is important to acknowledge its limitations. Enhanced learning efficiency and objective assessments are clear advantages, but there is also the risk of overreliance on technology, which might de-emphasize critical interpersonal skills essential in nursing practice. Technical demands and the cost of implementation are other practical challenges that institutions must consider.

Ethically, the use of AI in nursing education must prioritize student data privacy, transparency in algorithm design, and vigilance against algorithmic bias (Becze 2024). As someone involved in developing Jane, I can attest that ethical responsibility and fairness are central to our design process. We work to ensure that the AI is continually validated and improved using diverse datasets and transparent logic to support equitable outcomes (HealthStream, 2021). Drawing on my experience as part of the Jane development team, I believe that the thoughtful integration of AI can enhance, rather than replace, the vital human elements of nursing education.
