Most police departments value their officer being well-rounded and having a basic or "working knowledge" of many different topics, as opposed to developing a mastery in one field. Even highly trained units or fields are referred to only as specialties or specialized units. I feel this may be due to the nature of police work where you do not know what you will encounter each day. However, I can imagine the effectiveness of officers would increase with clearly defined and unique roles
