An ad hoc network is made on$$the$$fly by the participating nodes without requirement of any centralized infrastructure. $$Ad hoc$$ is a Latin phrase that means $$for this$,$ and this phrase defines well the characteristic of an ad hoc network, which is created by its participating nodes for this $($any$)$ particular application. An ad hoc network is formed by two or more participating nodes that want to communicate with each other and do not possess the time, resource, or scenario to set up a traditional network in terms of wired connectivity or routing and administrative infrastructures in terms of access points, switches, and routers. The nodes in an ad hoc network may communicate continuously, regularly, or on a requirement basis. The lack of network support infrastructure necessitates the participating network nodes of the ad hoc network to help each other in communicating in the network. This makes them play the dual role of host as well as the networking device. The $$network device$$ role of the node is responsible for one or more of the activities such as signal amplification, packet forwarding, detecting neighbor nodes, participating in routing, detecting network attacks, and ensuring secured communication. The reach or the size of an ad hoc network completely depends on the number of participating nodes, as well as the willingness of these ad hoc nodes to participate in the process of routing information to and from their neighbors.
