An attempt to open a nonexistent file for input generates a runtime error. If a file that already exists is opened for writing, the contents of the file will be erased. One way to prevent these two unwanted events from happening is to use the Boolean-valued os.path.isfile function. Another way to prevent these events from happening is to use a try statement. The try statement is discussed in Chapter 6.
