An automatic rain gauge has recorded rainfall data for 10 years. Using the data, we obtained the following table listing annual maximum rainfall depth for the duration of 10 minutes. (i) Use the plotting position method (Pm=m/n) to determine the rainfall intensity for the duration of 10 minutes and two return periods, 5 years and 10 years. Assume the annual maximum rainfall depth follows the Extreme Value Type I distribution. (ii) Calculate the 5-year, 10-year and 50-year rainfall intensities for the 10-minute duration, and (iii) determine the return period for a rainfall intensity of 120 mm/hr for duration of 10 minutes. (iv) Comment upon the results from the Extreme Value TypeI distribution and the plotting position method for 5- year and 10-year return periods.
