Question:
An Industrial-Organizational psychologist is investigating the effects of different types of motivation on the performance of clerical tasks. Ten subjects in the “individual motivation” sample are told that they will be rewarded according to how many tasks they successfully complete. Then ten subjects in the “group motivation” sample are told that they will be rewarded based on the average number of tasks completed for the group. The data follows:
Individual: 11, 17, 14, 10, 11, 15, 10, 8, 12, 15
Group: 10, 15, 14, 8, 9, 14, 6, 7, 11, 13
Do the groups differ in terms of performance? Provide a 95% confidence interval for the group difference.
You are NOT to calculate the results, just simply explain how you would attack each problem.
a) Identify the analysis you will use – specify the hypotheses
b) provide the reason(s) that you will do that analysis (go through the steps) e.g., categorical data and looking for a dependency between the sets of scores
c) give the assumptions for each analysis – and identify when you might not be able to use the specific technique you’d like or any corrections you might employ (eg. Correct for df under certain conditions in independent groups t-test)
d) Describe how you’d check the assumptions (if appropriate) and what you would do if the assumptions are met or not (eg. Equality of variances not supported)
