Production department of ABC company is divided into mainly four sections which
are production planning, dipping, knitting, and compounding section. Here, planning
section is doing production planning based on the sale orders and the supportive
conditions for glove dipping and glove knitting. Dipping section is executing the
production plan to dip rubber coating on knitted glove based on plant condition.
Knitting section is knitting the gloves based on production plan to give next process
of dipping. Finally, compounding section is preparing compounding which means
rubber coating for glove dipping process. In the compounding process, they are using
lots of chemicals and rubber latex based on approval of technical departments process
control section.
Research and development department is a one of the core functional department of
ABC company. Mainly, it has two sections which are research section and
development section. Here, t
horizontal communications structure among process control section (part of technical
department), compounding section (part of production department), and research
and development department. It can be led to discord among the employees and
strategic failure terms of collaboration, coordination and control. Because,
compounding section is a pure basic science-based section but it is attached with
unrelated production department instead of related technical department.
Furthermore, most of the testing and control parts are doing in compounding section
by process control section. The current organizational structure of ABC company had
been created two years ago. In that period, compounding section was merged with
production department from technical department due to job rotation of technical
manager who became as production manager. After onwards, so many problems are
created that lead to failure of performance of company and employees. Some of the
practical issues are provided here as evidence to strengthen the argument:
There is lots of rubber latex compound wastage due to lack of material handling
skills in the compounding section. But even technical department has plenty of
experts in field of rubber latex compound; compounding section is not asking
any recommendation or technical support from technical department due to
poor horizontal communication among them.
There is around 100 metric ton natural rubber old compounds, 25 metric ton
nitrile rubber old compounds, and 10 metric ton neoprene rubber old
compounds are cumulated within one year period due poor material
preparation and lack of planning skills.
Compounding section has KPI to reuse the old compound stock within this
year. Due to this reason, they are blending excess amount of old compound
with new compound to send dipping plant without doing any previous
research on the blending ratio or without informing to technical department
(process section). It leads to so many process related issues, and then unloaded
from the plant and send back to compounding section. These kinds of activities
are continuously on going on the shop floor for last two years.
For last few months, some of the dipping plants have touched around 10%
rejections and 40% reworks due to compound property variations. It leads to
accumulation of WIP, production re-scheduling, shipment delay, and poor
product quality meanwhile process control section is getting huge pressure
from top management to control these issues.
Research and development department has done some plant trials without
informing to process control section and without formal documentation with
collaboration with compounding section. It leads to unwanted plant down
time, rejects, and rework in the plant meanwhile creating grievance among
process control section, compounding section, and R&D department. It may
lead to unwanted workplace violence in the future.
Therefore, above evidences are clearly show that there are some strategic failures in
the organizational structure design and implementation in terms of communication,
collaboration, coordination and control
