Question:
Analyse the current labour market and develop a recruitment strategy for the target job. Identify the tools, channels, and platforms required for effective recruitment.
The labour market in the personal support industry is highly demanded for several reasons. The first one is the change in demographic; due to the growing ageing population, more care workers are needed to support the elderly but also more jobs are made available due to retirements (Brzezicki, 2022; Job Bank, 2022). The pandemic has also played a role in the increased demand for personal support workers (Brzezicki, 2022). Additionally, the turnover rate is important in this industry which creates job opportunities (Job Bank, 2022; Sudbury and Manitoulin, 2019). A study made by the Workforce Planning for Sudbury and Manitoulin in 2019 found out that 54% of PSW were planning to quit in the following five years. This high turnover can however be decreased, multiple ways to do so are possible (Sudbury and Manitoulin, 2019). The principal way to retain workers was found to increase benefits (pension, salary, health care, …). Other factors were found to have a positive relationship with job retention such as more training, split shifts which enables more flexibility, advancement opportunities, being more valued in the health care sector, and having a higher staff-to-clients ratio (Sudbury and Manitoulin, 2019). Having good relations with clients, clients’ family members, co-workers, and bosses were also found to help decrease turnover (Sudbury and Manitoulin, 2019).
The recruitment strategy involves decreasing the turnover rate and hiring more to successfully decrease the shortage of supply. Recruiting can be done with the use of external sources such as Indeed and ZipRecruiter. There are various recruiting sites to select from.
Another way would be to attract new students from colleges nearby such as Brock University or Niagara College. Focusing on younger/ newer students would be a goal considering most of them would be looking for volunteer opportunities or summer jobs to boost their resumes and free time with not much to do with it. To do so the company can get involved in university life by attending events filled with first year students: like orientation weeks, doing presentations to educate students on what PSW is, having more collaborations and gatherings to attract more students. Additionally, the company could focus on promoting its brand and its needs for workers on social media platforms such as Instagram where more younger potential workers are active. Emphasising what the company does and what the volunteers would do on the social platforms might also drive the interest up, Not knowing what is expected of the position could lead to some people not clicking the links to apply. Referrals like word of mouth would be another method, incentivizing people who can get their friends to join the company or resharing job listings on their socials to help attract more people.
