A team is a small number of people who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold them- selves collectively accountable. A team is ef- fective when leadership becomes a shared ac- tivity, accountability shifts from strictly indi- vidual to both individual and collective, the group develops its own purpose or mission, problem solving become a way of life, not a part-time activity and effectiveness is mea- sures by the results of the team and not individuals. Teams are more effective when they develop and encourage certain teamwork competen- cies. Every team member should contribute equally to the goal or the mission that the team has set out to achieve by completing work on time, coming to meetings prepared, communi- cating effectively, listening to team members, accept and give constructive feedback, help team plan and organize work, possess neces- sary knowledge, skills and abilities that will be meaningful to the team and care that the team produce high-quality work. As an individual that is part of the team, un- derstanding and exhibiting certain behaviors will make you an excellent team player. To be an effective team player, it is imperative to be competent, collaborative and committed. Be- ing an effective team leader teaches you coop- eration, commitment, patience, how to work together and helps you be a more responsible individual. There are many types of teams set up for dif- ferent reasons. They include work teams, project teams, cross-functional teams, self- managed teams and virtual teams. All these teams possess different characteristics and functions but are put together to accomplish a common goal or task
