answer all parts to this problem please Problem 1: Baghouses/Scrubbers (30 points)
A manufacturing plant has been required to install a particulate control system to remove 93% of
its PM emissions. The dust size distribution is shown in the table below. The total airflow is
10,000cfm at 90F and 1atm. The mass loading is 50 grains ?ft3. The particle density is the same
as that of water.
Assuming that this is a fly ash gas stream with a viscosity of 0.07kgmh and density of 1kgm3,
compare the energy requirements (in Watts) and the electricity cost (in $, for the state of CT)
between:
a) A reverse air-flow baghouse with a cleaning time of 3min and filtration time of 2hrs,Ke=
0.50in.H2Oftmin and Ks=0.001in.H2O-ft-mingr and assuming that the area of one bag
is 1m2(10pts)
and
b) A Venturi scrubber with QL/QG of 1Lm3, a velocity of 100ms and a throat length of 25cm
(assume hydrophilic particles)(10pts).
c) For the electricity cost assume that each system operates for 350 days per year. State clearly
any other assumptions you will make for the electricity cost calculation. Make a choice between
the two systems and explain your reasoning. (10 pts)
