Coursework 1 - Research Report writing (50%) 50% of the final assessment will be done with a report around 1500 words on how wellknown off-the-shelf exploits, for example from Metasploit, are detected by protection mechanisms, and evaluating methods of avoiding this protection. This coursework is intended to assess your knowledge of evasive/obfuscation technologies commonly utilized in addition to evaluating your understanding of how exploits work. Instructions You are to write a research paper discussing on how well-known off-the-shelf exploits, for example from Metasploit, are detected by protection mechanisms, and evaluating methods of avoiding this protection. The report should be supported by references to relevant conference, journal articles and books (between 10 and 15, of which a maximum of 5 can be books). Your paper should be a detailed discussion and evaluation of the issues of detection techniques used to detect off-the-shelf exploits and their bypasses. As a guide, your paper should be about 1500 words (excluding references). Care should be taken to ensure that your paper is unbiased and accurately referenced using the APA 7th (Coventry University) referencing system (see attached sheet for an explanation of this and potential sources of help). Quotations should be no more than two lines long and, taken all together, should represent less than 10% of the words written. The remaining 90% of this assignment must be entirely in your own words. Your paper should be appropriately sectioned, well-structured and should clearly set out your own analysis and conclusions.
