Case in consideration: Donut King [15 Marks] Case in consideration: Donut King Ted Ngoy, a Cambodian immigrant, is known for his venture Donut King", a famous California based Donuts chain. He migrated to the USA in 1975 where he settled, with his family, in immigrant camps. After few weeks they shifted to Orange County and started cleansing services at Church with a monthly salary of $ 500. Due to the inability to meet family expenses Ted starting two more part-time jobs. While working on a petrol station, Ted observed a Donut shop with huge customer traffic. He inquired about the business and was informed that he needs the training to start such a business. He enrolled for a three months training with Winchell's Donuts. He started his first shop in 1977, named Christy's Donuts. This was his first success which was backed by his wife and three sons. His family used to support him in all business activities and their brand was recognized for Pink packing". By 1987 Ted owned 32 Christy's Donuts outlets, while mostly leased to the Cambodian citizens. He was called Donut King for his achievements and success. But fate turned its side when Ted started visiting Los Vegas and had his first taste of gambling in the 1980s. He started spending weeks over there losing most of his wealth and leased franchises against the loan taken for gambling. Ultimately the business empire ended and he returned to Cambodia and contested election in 1993 and 1998. He could not succeed but was selected as commerce minister. Here again, he gambled his rest of the wealth and put all his money on new breeds of rice that could not be realized. Ultimately, he left Cambodia and went back to the USA, and started living in a yard of an old lady. He is still living in country yards and Churches and is an example of both successful and failed entrepreneurs.
