At the start of January 2020, there were reports in China about a new virus that had been discovered which began to spread rapidly. By mid-March, many countries began to become infected with this new virus, COVID-19. The United States of America was hit hard, and many stores, restaurants, and businesses had to close due to the severity of the coronavirus. As of today, the virus is still having a significant impact on this country and has stalled our economic growth. One group of businesses which has been impacted the most is the restaurant industry, and according to an article written by CNBC, the author, Anjali Sundaram, stated that over 60% of restaurants had been forced to permanently close because of COVID-19. The other 40% of restaurants that remained open are struggling financially because they are only able to stay open at a limited capacity. On top of financial losses, masks are required in restaurants and when customers order their food, the waiters and waitresses have a difficult time hearing them because of the mask. In an AARP article by Stacey Colino, she writes that Eryn Staats, an audiology manager, says masks can muffle people's voices anywhere from 4-12 decibels, which is a significant amount. When people have a hard time hearing each other, frustration can grow which can be irritating to both the customer and the staff of the restaurant or business.
