In 2017 Dove (a soap and shampoo company) released a 3-second Facebook advertisement that showed a Black woman taking off her shirt to reveal a white woman underneath. The ad instantly became criticized for racism. Many people viewed the ad as making the claim that using Doves products would somehow turn someone white, and even worse, making the claim that white skin was more desirable. Dove apologized and said they missed the mark and it was not their intention to be racist. However, this was not the first problematic ad they had released. In 2011, Dove released an ad which featured 3 different women whose skin tones get lighter from left to right. On the left the word before was written above the darkest skinned woman, and on the right after was written above the lightest skinned woman. This ad was also criticized for sending the racist message that lighter skin was better, and Dove again appologised. What would a Virtue Ethicist say of this pattern of advertising by Dove?
