Case Study- Flexible Working Hours

A flexi-time system appears to be appropriate in this situation. The workers are skilled and experienced so there would be no requirement for supervisors to be present at all times during the working day. Core hours would take care of meetings.

Alternatively, a staggered working hours system could be introduced whereby different groups of workers start at different times and end work accordingly. In this scenario, each worker would choose when they wish to start each day. A change in the current working hours moving the starting time to earlier or later than the current start (and the finishing time would also change accordingly) might be beneficial to avoid jams although it would not give individual freedom to workers to choose hours which best suit them. Workers who enrol in a study programme could either work on a flexi-time system whereby on days/evenings they have classes, they take time off to attend, and on other days they work longer hours to make up for the lost work-time. They may be permitted to work on their official days off to substitute for half-days off given for attending classes.

It is unlikely those changing working hours patterns alone will solve the problem of worker dissatisfaction and lateness. The manager needs to take a holistic view and examine all possible issues which may be causing the problems. It is also probable that increasing wages and other benefits will not solve the issue either in this situation.

Determine what should management do to ensure that changes would solve problem?
