Detection is one of the first steps in perceptionyou must detect that something is there before you can recognize and identity it. Detection happens early and quickly. But you can also detect something and not be aware of what itis, or be totally sure you saw it, yet still respond accurately. We have perception for detail and perception for things like motion which may need to be processed more quickly. You need to start to duck out of the way when an object is coming toward you quickly, not be able to identify what it is. Research on early perception via detection gives us insight into how the mind processes information even when you cannot confidently report what is going on in your mind. Signal detection is crucial to understand, particularly in settings where devices alarm us to problems. Medical devices in particular have many warning sounds that clinicians in hospitals may become desensitized to over time.
