After reading, "A Mother's Request\" in the textbook, we see thfat tt:! s'z;lt fle: i shocked and appalled by his mom's comment. She told him before e % ' college, "Now don't you marry a White woman" (p. 153).'After ?he made tha ~ comment, he was extremely confused and taken aback since this wfent against everything she's ever taught him about diversity and how he should acce'pt everyone for who they are (p. 159). | think the mother felt the way she did because she was genuinely concerned for how it would affect him overall as' a person, that would includes: his cultural values, and well-being. Regarding hns. cultural values, she's concerned that marrying a woman from a different ethnic background would result in him not putting in as much time into his cultural traditions and values as he used to (p. 159). Regarding his overall well-being, she's concerned that marrying woman from a different ethnic background would result in life becoming more difficult for him; dealing with social stigmas and possible stereotypes, and have to continually defend each other and their relationship. She was also concerned that it would lead to people becoming violent while expressing their disapproval of their relationship, and that their children someday would have to deal with all of these possibilities when they grow up (p. 159). This conflict could be resolved through him and his future partner equally investing their time, and showing interest in their own cultural values, along with each others values. This way, his mom could have peace of mind when it comes to the cultural values aspect of her concerns. The conflict of his well-being could be resolved if they (the son and his future spouse) know others/couples who are in interracial relationships, or if there are families in their communityeighborhood who can relate to them and share similar backgrounds. That, along with having a strong bond & security in their relationship would make it much easier for the couple as a whole, and their well-being
