Forum Exercise #11: Hal, Mal, & Sal... B) Hal & Mal? C) Mal & Sal Answer both Why AND Why NOT... both! FACT PATTERN: Hal, Mal, and Sal are (or were) lifelong friends and surfing mates. The three were having several beers at Charlie's late one summer night and the following events took place... Hal says, "Hey you guys, I'm thinking of taking my dad up on his offer to travel around the world for a year, what you think?" Both Mal and Sal said that sounded very interesting. Hal followed with, "Yea, but who will look after my pad and pool while I'm gone for all those months?" Hal had a house on the cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Cardiff that included a pool, spa, 7 bedrooms - 4 bath homes, and a guest house by the pool. It was in pristine condition and the pride of Hal's material possessions. Mal quickly stated, "I'll house sit your pad and take care of everything while you're gone, what do you say?" Mal finished of the last of his drink. Hal responded, "That sounds good Mal but you will have to keep everything in the great condition I'm leaving it in and not trash the place like you do your own pad. Sal, you are good at taking care of things, are very reliable, and looking for a new place to live. What do you say about house sitting my place for the time I'm gone, covering all the expenses, and maintaining the property for me?" Sal, who was quiet up to now answered, "Well, I am looking to move since my landlord sold my place and I am good at taking care of things. Your place is primo and it would be a blast to be that close to the beach but I don't know if I can afford the place and it would take a lot of work to keep it in the same condition that you do. Still it sounds too good to pass up."Hal added, "Well, think about it for a while but I need to let my dad know if I'm going with him very soon." Hal then got up, said good night and headed home. Once Hal was gone, Mal said to Sal, "What are you nuts! Think about the fun we would have in Hal's place! The surf & suds, the girls & parties, call Hal and say we will do it." Sal replied, "Yea it does sound great but I don't even know what all the cost will be." Mal quickly added, "I'll share the cost with you. I'll take care of the pool, the grounds, and live in the guest house. You can have the main home to yourself and rent out two or three of the extra bedrooms to help us with the expenses." Sal, "Okay I'll call Hal in the morning and tell him I'll do it." The two stumbled out into the night since last call had come and gone. The next morning Sal didn't call Hal; however, the three guys meet two days later at sunset to catch a few waves. Sal says to Hal as they wade into the foam, "I'll house sit for you and cover costs while you are gone but you have to be back in less than a year because I'm planning to leaving on an extended surf trip to Fiji and Bali myself this time next year." Hal, "It is a deal, I tell my dad that I'm in on his trip if he will fly me back home when necessary so it doesn't interfere with your trip. Mal screamed in ecstasy for he knew it was only days away from party time. That night Hal confirmed the situation with his dad and emailed Sal that he would be back at the end of the year and trusted him to take care of everything. Hal left the next day for his trip.
