Appendix A - Possible Clients

A support group meets once a week, together with one of the clinicians in the office, to discuss their experiences and symptoms of social anxiety. The group is designed to help clients learn from and support one another and practice new skills in a low-stakes environment.

• Cassidy Williams is a 31-year-old woman who is addicted to prescription painkillers. She has been coming to the office for outpatient therapy for over 6 months, but has begun to consider inpatient treatment options that might be available to her.
• Veronica Gates is a 19-year-old single mother. Her family and many of her friends live out of state. She is nervous about her skills as a parent and her ability to provide and care for her twin infant sons.
• A refugee support group meets once a month, together with one of the social workers in the office, to discuss issues like securing employment, maintaining ties with family who live outside of the country, and participating in local social activities while maintain elements of one's home culture.
• Dwayne Harper, a 24-year-old man who is currently on parole for a nonviolent offense, has been talking with a social worker in the office about how to secure employment and adjust to life outside of prison.
• Thomas Christianson is a 27-year-old man who has been working with one of the clinicians in the office to better the symptoms of his generalized anxiety disorder. Thomas recently reported to his therapist that he has experienced thoughts of harming himself, though he does not intend to act upon them.

Text Message and Email Content

For your message drafts, you can select whichever clients you would like from the list provided in Appendix A (at the end of this document). However, you must pick a different client for each of the following prompts.

• draft of a text message that could be used to cancel and reschedule a session with one of the clients or client groups from Appendix A.
• Imagine that one of the clients (or a member of one of the client groups) from Appendix A emails the office asking for resources to help explain their condition or current situation to their friends and family. draft of an email reply to them.
• Imagine that one of the clients (or a member of one of the client groups) from Appendix A emails the office saying that recently their symptoms or current situation has worsened, and they were hoping for some advice. draft of an email reply to them.

Narrative Content

After completing the drafts of your emails/ text messages, narrative , in which you explain how your messages are consistent with the values, ethics, and legal responsibilities of professionals in the human and social services field. Justify your rationale. In your narrative you might focus on topics such as how you maintained client confidentiality, client safety, professional boundaries, etc.
