Appendix D Name of the legislation - Two (2) key practices that are prohibited by the law The Racial discrimination act 1975 was Australia's first major anti-discrimination statue aimed at banning discrimination based on colour, ethnicity or national origin. Jurisdictions within Australia moved soon after, by acts including the Equal opportunity act 1977 and the Anti-discrimination act 1977 to ban sex discrimination. With the sex discrimination act 1984, the Australian parliament extended these provisions to include all Australians and include provisions based on sex, relationship status and pregnancy. A brief summary of how compliance to these laws will be audited(wherever applicable) Racial discrimination exists under the RDA when, due to their ethnicity, colour or ethnic origin, someone is treated less equally than someone else in a similar situation. Racial discrimination can also occur when everyone is viewed in the same way by a policy or law, but really has an unequal impact on more people than those of a similar race, descent or ethic origin. It is against the law to discriminate in areas such as: Employment - e.g. when seeking employment, training, promotion, equal pay or conditions of employment; Land, housing or accommodation - e.g. when buying a house or when renting; Provision of goods and services e.g. when buying something, applying for credit, using banks, seeking assistance from government departments, lawyers, doctors and hospitals, or attending restaurants, pubs, entertainment venues; Access to places and facilities for use by the public - e.g. when trying to use parks, libraries, government offices, hotels, places of worship, entertainment centres, hire cars; Advertising e.g. advertising for a job stating that people from a certain ethnic group cannot apply; The 1977 Anti- discrimination act is the NSW parliament act on job discrimination, the public education system, the provision of goods and services, and other services such as banking, healthcare and night clubs. In such cases, the act forbids arbitrary racial, sexual and other forms of discrimination and ensures equal opportunities for all persons.
