Apportionment Major Lab: Individual Part
This is a major lab with both an individual part and a group part.
During this week (Week 3) you will only be working on the Individual Part. This part will be graded on completion,
not accuracy. This part will be 40% of your final grade for the lab.
During next week (Week 4) you will be working with your group to combine files and create a final Excel file to
submit. This part will be graded for accuracy and will be 60% of your final grade for the lab.
For this lab, you have been assigned to a group. You can access your group by going to the Groups section of
Blackboard. Each group has been assigned an existing country of the world. You will do some research to learn
about its method of apportionment and then apply the methods that you have studied to this country to see if
there are any big differences.
General Instructions:
This project should be done entirely in the Excel file provided in your group. Any paragraphs of information
and all answers to the questions should be typed in textboxes in Excel and all calculations and tables should be
labeled well. (You must do all work in Excel, not just type answers you found in other ways.) Post your
completed Excel file as an attachment to your reply in your groups discussion.
Part 1: Research
Research the name and a description of your countrys legislative body that would be apportioned based on
population. Typically, this is the lower house of the legislature if there happens to be more than one. Write a
short paragraph giving the name of your countrys legislative body together with a description of its makeup
and how its members are currently selected. In addition, include the number of representatives that comprise
your countrys legislative body here.
Part 2: Apportionment
1. Determine the standard divisor for your country. Do this work in the appropriate place in the given Excel file.
2. Determine the standard quotas for each region of your country. Do this work in the appropriate place in the
given Excel file.
3. Apportion the appropriate number of seats to each region in your country according to each of the following
apportionment methods: Hamilton, Jefferson, Webster, and Hill-Huntington.
Do all work for the methods on the sheets provided for each method in the given Excel file. You will
need to add columns to complete this work.
Show only the final answers on the first sheet. (Be sure when you bring your answers to the first sheet
to use Paste Special: Values Only. You do not want to bring any formulas from the other sheets to the
first sheet.)
Part 3: Conclusion
Leave this blank for now. You will complete this part with your group during Week 4.
The Individual Part of the Apportionment Lab is due before 11:59pm on Sunday, February 2. To submit your
Individual Part, post your completed Excel file as an attachment to your reply in your groups discussion.
