ARCH 2211-2024
Ex 2.4a Beam Design Sizing Exercise (group)
Given the floor framing isometric and the material performance specs, design and size both beams B-1A and B-1C.
Outputs for each beam shall include : its LVM diagram, solution to find dv and dB of each beam, and its foreseen sag
Information:
Total Load =100 #/ sqft
Beam B-1A-supported at the ends
Beam B-1C - supported at one end + overhang
Glulam Beam Maximum Allowables :
fs=1600 psi ,fv=200 psi
=L240,E=1.8M psi
b=3 inch ,d=?
Task for this exercise :
Design both glue-laminated beams B-1A and B-1C, sizing them optimally based on the max. stress & sag limits
Outputs :
Define the tributary area to generate the beam's loading diagram.
Develop complete LVM diagrams for each beam (complete labels and units).
Use f3 and fv tests to size each beam. Then round up "d" to next upper inch. Then use the round-up size to verify sag is within the standard of L240.
State clearly the final size for each beam.
Draw graphic outputs well. Box final answers. Remember units.
