As I reflect on this week's topic, the idea that resonates most with me is the importance of innovation as a societal process rather than an isolated organizational activity. Silvestre and rc (2019) argue that innovation for sustainable development requires collaboration across industries, governments, and communities to achieve systemic change. This perspective, which I find inspiring, aligns with my Air Force experience, where mission outcomes were rarely the result of one unit's effort. Instead, they came from joint operations that leveraged diverse knowledge and capabilities, much like societal innovation, which integrates multiple perspectives for a broader impact. A significant unanswered question for me, and one that I believe will engage you as well, is: How can highly structured organizations, such as the military, encourage openness and experimentation required for innovation without undermining the need for necessary command and control? I often observed how rigid hierarchy slowed adaptation, even when time-sensitive challenges demanded creative solutions.
