Title: Exploration with the Slopes of Tangents
Lab Section & Meeting Time
Lecture Instructor & Meeting Time
Section 1
We will investigate slopes of tangent lines by starting with the tangent line for the cosine
function at a specific point c=2. You may need to review the basic Matlab commands
from previous labs to complete this part.
Review Check: In a new section of your LiveScript, define the function f(x)=
cos(x) and create a plot of the function.
Eyeballing a tangent line --- up to a point. Make that 2 points.
Use the zoom feature to zoom in on the graph where x=2 until the graph looks like a
straight line. You will probably need to zoom in about 6 times.
To calculate the slope of the "line," you will need the coordinates of two points on the
graph. Switching the zoom cursor to the data cursor, find the coordinates of two points,
one with x-coordinate as close to 2 as reasonably possible, and the second not so close
to 2. Enter the coordinates of the two points in the command line below.
x1=;y1=;x2=;y2=
Comprehension Check: Write and run a command to find the slope of the line
containing those two points. Make sure that slope is assigned to the variable, "m."
