In law enforcement, when an accident involving HAZMAT or hazardous chemicals occurred, we were instructed to notify dispatch of the substance and have another agency, such as state troopers, investigate. Typically, these guys were nearby to share information over the radio on the perimeter they would need. If there were an explosion involved, the state fire marshal would also assist in investigating the accident. Our job essentially was to contain the incident and keep the public at a safe distance, while relaying any information gathered so that proper agencies could be informed of the incident.

Now that I am going into the mining industry this month, I hope to be educated and more hands on experience in safely handling explosive materials.
