Assignment #1 Creating A Database Design Purpose: To demonstrate the ability to define and propose a database design. Problem: CSUF offers students the opportunity to participate in intramural sports. Although the university participates competitively in various sports, hundreds of students are part of an intramural team(s). Since the intramural sports are separate from the collegiate competitive sports, the Intramural Department wishes to maintain and manage their activities effectively and efficiently. As part of the program, various sports including basketball, softball, tennis, football, soccer, swimming and others are offered. Intramural sports are offered every semester and students are open to joining any term. In essence, students are allowed to play more than one sport and be a part of more than one team. The department usually assigns players to teams as well as assigns one coach per team. Although coaches may volunteer to coach more than one team, a team can only have one coach. Because there are a number of teams per each sport, each sport has their coordinator. Sport coordinators are responsible for overseeing all activities within a sport and usually conduct meetings with coaches in order to ensure that everything is running smoothly. A complex duty for the department is that of scheduling games because it is important that games have a set time, location or field number, and referees. Game schedules and its details have to be verified in order to ensure the following: - Locations or fields are not being double booked by having more than two teams playing at the same location at the same time. - All games have secured referees. Meaning that teams would not be able to play if no referees are present. - Competing teams can be easily identified per game match. Furthermore, the department also offers sports equipment that teams can check out and use for practices and games. Since keeping track of the equipment is critical to funding, the department wishes to improve how it monitors the use of its equipment and that each piece is accounted for at the end of each practice or game day. Based on various issues surrounding the management of its activities, the Intramural Department is seeking your assistance in proposing a database solution that will minimize errors and improve operations. Thus, the database should be able to provide details of the sports offered, teams, coaches, coordinators, referees, game details, and sports equipment. The database design should consider all of the business rules and practices stated in the case. Instructions: Identify and define the tables and fields for this case. Using parenthetical method present each table and its corresponding fields of your proposed normalized database design. The idea for the proposed database design to contain normalized tables in 3NF. Please make sure to state your assumptions for each table. An example of the parenthetical method for a "STUDENT" table is: STUDENT (Studentld, StudentName, Email, Age, Major) *Note: Attributes that comprise the primary key should be underlined and attributes that are foreign keys should be italized. Draw a model illustrating tables, fields and potential relationships. If you do not have access to MS Visio, you may use any other drawing tool (most MS Office applications have a drawing toolbar) to complete the task for this portion of the assignment. List five sample records or "dummy data" for each table. Discuss and explain how dummy data helps you discover if there are any anomalies in the proposed database design. Merge all items listed above into one document. Save your final report as a.pdf file. Submit the final deliverable in the appropriate link by the due date. *Note: A well-defined database design for this case will consist of more than six tables. 1
