Assignment 1: Develop a Problem Statement for Change using the Boeing 737 Max Case Study This is the first of three assignments which will, when combined, make a complete proposal to management on 1. Why to change (current state), 2. What to change (future state) and 3. How to change (the plan to achieve the future state). Focusing in this assignment on the Why to change aspect of the report, for each of the following sections, in just a few sentences for each bullet point, provide the following. Please make sure you label each topic by bullet point below: 1. Company Purpose and Performance: Summarize the value that Boeing provides to customers Explain where Boeing is performing well in meeting customer needs Explain where Boeing is not performing well in meeting these needs 2. Company Operating Context: Explain the key operations of Boeing that are managed by the audience for the report (Jennifer and David) Outline the competing interests that must be balanced effectively in order to perform well. Examples: Safety vs. cost and efficiency (ambidexterity challenge). 3. Problem Statement: Explain where you think objectives are not balanced given the current situation with the 737 Max. Organize your observations into three categories using words or phrases rather than complete sentences. A bulleted list in each category is appropriate: a) People b) Structure c) Culture Reflection - 1 to 2 paragraphs: Explain what concepts and language you used in order to influence Jennifer and David to understand your perspective on the current problem. Also, explain what concepts you believe would not be appropriate in influencing their thinking. (Hint: based on the Boeing articles, what perspective do you assume Jennifer and David each have regarding the problem? What pressures are on them to perform?) Please note that in this assignment you are only reporting on the current state. Avoid proposing solutions or a future-state in this assignment. Additional information such as information flow and metrics, etc. will be made available for assignments 2 and 3 for you to build your report further.
