Assignment 1

You will need to identify an issue/event that is relevant to their community at the intersection of the criminal justice system. This short paper will be the first draft/iteration of the lead paragraph for your final project. The paper should be written in a manner in which someone unfamiliar with the issue/event gains a general understanding about the topic and why it is relevant.

1. Running Title head. At the top of the first page.

2. Social Problem/event (community issue). Identify a social problem, issue/event within your community that relates to the criminal justice system to serve as a working topic for your final project. Students can discuss the impact of the issue/event nationwide but it must be connected locally. The assignment should address the 5Ws and H of the event/issue that you are reporting about.

DO NOT systematically address the 5Ws and H by answering each one-by-one. Rather, the list below is a guide for what should be addressed in your paper.

  • Who: are those that are mainly affected by the issue/event being reported?
  • What: are the key events?
  • Where: did those events take place?
  • Why: did these events occur?
  • When: did these events happened?
  • How did the events occur, or what made them able to happen.

3. Background Research & Citations.

While there are no minimum or maximum source requirements for this assignment, students must conduct research and reference background information about their topic. It is not enough to describe an event or issues. Students must provide context, data, facts, historical reference, or other form of context for the topic being covered.
