Thread & Fibre, a household linens manufacturer, operates in Ontario and Quebec. The organization currently has 150 employees and a global payroll of $7.5 million.
Changing consumer demands have drastically reduced sales of some product lines. The organization's management has determined that the best course of action will be to discontinue the production of those products.
As a result, some employees will be reassigned to different product lines, and those who cannot be reassigned will be terminated. The decision on which employees will be reassigned versus terminated is still pending and will be based on several factors. However, the current estimate is that fifteen (15) positions in Ontario and seven (7) in Quebec will be permanently eliminated.
This is the first time in the company's history that it will experience a significant reduction in its workforce. The management team is unfamiliar with the legislative requirements for terminations. It has turned to you, the organization's Payroll Professional, for guidance.
You have been asked to research and prepare a report detailing the types of termination payments required under legislation for each jurisdiction. Additionally, any statutory employer costs associated with the termination payments must be identified.
Prepare your response (450 - 600 words) using your name, correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. You will be penalized if you are excessively over or under the suggested word count. Your response must be stated in your own words. It should be based on the course material, your experiences, knowledge gained through the course and at least one external government resource.
Any responses taken directly from the external government resource or course material will not be accepted. Information from the government resource(s) and the course material must be cited. For example:
