Assignment 2: Web Hosting and DNS Resolution
This assignment will test your research and practical skills in understanding how Web
Hosting and DNS Resolution work using Windows Server. Your group will set up a Web
Server, a DNS server, and additional components across multiple virtual machines (VMs)
using VirtualBox. The tasks are divided among students in the group, with each student
responsible for at least one task as described below.
Instructions:
Each student should take responsibility for at least one task.
The assignment will be completed entirely within a Windows Server environment.
Coordinate within your group to ensure successful completion of all tasks.
Submit a single document as a group with your names and IDs in the header.
Tasks Overview:
Task 1: Web Server Configuration
Objective: Configure a local web server using Microsoft Internet Information
Services (IIS). Create multiple simple websites hosted on this server. Document the
process with screenshots.
Task 2: DNS Server Configuration
Objective: Set up a DNS server using Microsoft Server DNS. Install and configure
the DNS server on a different VM. Create multiple DNS zones to manage the
domains that will be hosted. Document the process with screenshots.
Task 3: Hosting Multiple Websites and DNS Management
Objective: Host multiple websites or web services with distinct domain names on the
web server and configure the DNS server to manage their domain names. Host the
websites created in Task 1 on the web server. Configure the DNS server (Task 2) to
assign domain names to these websites using various DNS records (A, AAAA, PTR,
etc.). Document the process with screenshots.
Task 4: DNS Filtering and DNSSEC Configuration
Objective: Configure the DNS server to block access to certain websites and set up
DNSSEC to ensure data integrity and authentication. Implement DNS filtering by
redirecting requests to certain websites to a block page. Configure DNSSEC on the
DNS server. Document the process with screenshots.
Task 5(Bonus): Network Configuration for VM Communication
Objective: Ensure that all VMs (used by different students) can communicate within
the same local network. Adjust the network settings in VirtualBox to allow VMs to
communicate with each other. Verify the connectivity between VMs by pinging each
other and testing the DNS resolution for hosted websites. Document the process with
screenshots.
Submission Guidelines:
Documentation: Prepare a single Word document containing:
o Clear explanations of the steps implemented for each task.
o Screenshots of key steps in the configuration process.
o A section where each student reflects on their individual tasks, what they
learned, and any challenges faced.
Group Information: Include the names and IDs of all group members in the
document header.
Deadline: Ensure the document is submitted by the deadline.
Note:
If your group encounters issues connecting VMs across physical computers, focus on
completing the tasks individually on your VMs without worrying about network
connectivity between them.
Collaborate effectively, and make sure all tasks are completed to achieve the best
results.
