Assignment #4 (10%)
Making a Persuasive Presentation
Overview
The graded assessment for this module continues the work on a presentation for the scenario about the Small Business Competition started in Module 3.
You will continue to work with the same partner(s) to put together the actual presentation that you planned in Module 3.
To remind you, here again is the scenario we are using for Module 3 & 4 . . .
Imagine you want to start-up your own small business when you finish college and you learn that the college has a competition to provide funding to help a graduating student start-up a business. To decide who will win the competition and receive funding, all participants will need to submit a business proposal AND make a presentation to a panel consisting of 4 members of the business faculty from the college.
You have already provided a business plan or proposal with all the information required in the application for the competition BUT now you need to prepare the slide presentation you will make to the panel of judges.
The purpose of your presentation is to make your small business idea stand out as unique and unforgettable from the projects or business ideas of other students.
Your presentation will need to show your ability to use (a) presentation features and (b) persuasive techniques.

In total, you need to choose 3 persuasive techniques to include in the presentation you prepare.
Description of the PowerPoint Features & Persuasive Techniques
To get marks for your use of presentation techniques, you need to provide a slide at the end of your presentation to give the details about the presentation features and persuasive techniques that you have used.
Keep track of the techniques you are using and identify which slides they have been included on. Put this information into a table and include it on the last slide of your presentation.
You will ONLY receive marks for your presentation features and persuasive techniques IF you document them on your final slide.
Here is what the final presentation slide needs to look like to get full marks for this part of the evaluation . . .

Presentation Content & Composition
Here are the guidelines you need to follow to prepare the slides in your presentation . . .
(A) Cover Page
Take some time to think about the 'visual branding' that you want to use to introduce your business idea on the cover page.
IMPORTANT: Remember this is one of the 'required' presentation techniques that you need to include in your presentation.
- Match your design elements such as colour, fonts, images, placement, etc. with your branding concept.
- Make your design elements consistent to reinforce your branding throughout your presentation.
Here are examples of visual branding for a business selling antiques, you could . . .
- Use a traditional font or script such as 'harlow'.
- Make your colour scheme black and white like an old photograph.
- Incorporate an old picture frame as the border for your slides.
(B) Content or Topics
For the content of your presentation, some of the topics are assigned and some are chosen by you. Read below to find out about the content to include in your presentation.
- You should have at least 5 different topics with 3 to 4 bullets of information for each slide.
- Some topics will have 1 slide, some should have 2 slides.
- In total your presentation must be about 8 - 10 slides.
- One topic must be 'Your Personal Story'.
- The second topic must be 'Evidence to Support Your Success' (this is NEW).
- And for the last three topics, use the presentation content you prepared in Module 3.
A. Topic 1 - For the topic 'Your Personal Story,' provide some details about your own personal story and reasons for starting a business that you think will be interesting to the Panel of Judges and might persuade them to choose you as the winner.
Have you ever watched the television show, Shark Tank? There are often times that the investors (wealthy business persons) on this program comment that they are investing in someone's business idea because of their personal story. This means they are investing in the person NOT just the business idea. So tell your story !!!
If you are looking for some ideas, you could include:
- why you want to start a business
- your passion for the kind of business you are starting
- family involvement in business
- your business and/or personal goals
- dreams for the future
B. Topic 2 - For this topic, 'Evidence to Support Your Success,' give facts or opinions from experts to support your idea and demonstrate your business idea will be successful.
Use news stories, statistical data, etc.
Present your information in an interesting way such as tables or charts.
Try to include some statistical information about the place where you plan to set-up your business.
Make sure you provide some text to talk about how the facts / opinions you are presenting are related or relevant to your business idea.
Here is an example . . .
The chart on this slide shows the number of individuals that are aged 15 - 24 years old in the North Bay area. This is important because a huge percentage of our customers will be 13 - 20 years old.
IMPORTANT: Any research of course needs an APA reference !!! Include your full bibliography reference on each slide that contains external information.
C. Other Topics - You also need to include three (3) other topics in your presentation. Take information from the planning worksheets you completed in the last module.
