Paper consumption is rising throughout the world. Over $45$ percent of the world's annual commercial logging is for purposes of pulp, paper and plywood. Malaysia had shown tremendous increment of plywood and paper consumption per capita from $32\mathrm{.}6$ kg in $1988$ to $60\mathrm{.}8$ kg in $1992.$ Malaysia's pulp and paper industry predominantly comprises of paper mills concentrated on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. There are also pulp and integrated mills in Sabah, though to a lesser degree. Environmental scientists are constantly researching more about side effects of paper industry; problems that were unrecognised a few years ago are now seen as being of critical importance. Consumer pressure has added an important new dimension to corporate planning. Industry has had to become adept at meeting new challenges and demands. The environmental impact of the pulp and paper industry can be significantly minimised when appropriate environmental management procedures and clean technologies are applied.
