The purpose of this exercise is to help you gain some experience in setting your own school, work and personal goals and action plans to accompany them. We covered goal setting in Week 5(see resources in Weekly Content Week 5 folder).
Length of Assignment: Longer than 1 page, single-spaced. Submit in Word or PDF format. Use font size 12, Arial.
Please use point form and bullets to list the steps in your action plans. Single space your bullet points. Do NOT do in paragraph form.
1. For each of the following levels of goals:
-set one (1) goal for short range (within the next 2 years),
-one (1) for medium range (2-5 years from now) and
-one (1) for long range (beyond 5 years from now).
-Don't provide more than 1 goal per time range.
Goals can include things related to work (e.g. find a job, start a business, etc.), school (e.g. finish certificate, diploma, degree, get straight As, etc) or personal life (buy property, get married, move, travel, etc.).
**Please cover only 1 goal for each time period for this assignment. Make sure your goals are specific. You will lose marks if you give more than 1 goal per time period. For example: Saying that your goal is to finish school and get a job: that is 2 goals. Consider doing this: saying that you want to get a job as your goal. Then the steps to finishing school becomes some of the sub-steps in your accompanying Action Plan.
Make sure you adhere to the time periods for each goal.
2. Create a detailed action plan for each goal (so an action plan for your short range goal, an action plan for your medium range goal and an action plan for your long range goal).
-How many steps should you include in your action plan? When reading your action plan, I should see each step that you would need to take to achieve your goal.
-Include the step even if it seems obvious. Some steps might have sub-steps too. For example if a step in your action plan is to save money, detail step by step the details of how you would go about saving money. If a step in your action plan is to get a job, detail step by step how to find a job. Detail, detail, detail!
An Action Plan describes step by step how you are going to reach your goal. The major reason you need a detailed action plan for most goals is that without a method for achieving what you want, the goal is likely to slip by.
If your goal were to build your own log cabin, part of your action plan would be to
-learn how to operate a buzz saw,
-to read a handbook on log cabin building,
-to learn how to operate a tractor,
and so forth.
