Assignment Description
Objectives:
The recent COVID 19 restrictions have forced a company in Australia to undergo specific changes in its computer network. Suppose that you are hired as a network engineer to redesign and implement an updated computer network for the company. The company hopes to use the latest technology with a feasible budget and wants scope for future expansion.
You had a face-to-face meeting with the manager, but he comes from a non-technical background. So, the meeting did not yield much except for the following general information about the company.
There are two sites, one in Penrith and Newcastle. Penrith site requires50 employees, while Newcastle site has 30 employees. Both the sites have Reception, Finance, IT, Marketing and Manager departments. The Penrith site has two other departments, i.e., Human Resource and Public relations.
Your task is to propose an updated network design for further implementation. You are required to have the following three sections in the proposal.
Task 1:
You are required to have information regarding users, applications, and network requirements from the company's employees. You may use different techniques, i.e., Interviews and questionnaires, to do so.
Create a questionnaire to get application and network requirements. The questionnaire must have at least 3questions. Describe the purpose of each question and categorise the question whether it is focused on user, application or device requirements.
Task 2:
- Use the requirements identified at Task1 to redesign a WAN structure between Penrith and Newcastle by using a relevant network designing software. Draw a diagram to illustrate your high-level design.
- Design LAN IP addresses using the subnet 192.160.G.0/24, where G is your group number. It would be best to use the Variable Length Subnet Mask (VLSM)technique whilst creating the subnets and allow 5% for possible future expansion.
- Configure the topology devices with basic configurations, routing using Packet Tracer. An additional configuration such as VLAN and Port security is entitled to extra marks.
Task 3: Video demonstration
In the video demonstration, students are required to make a video explaining the network topology and configuration of the network design. The video should have
- the overall approach of the network design,
- description of the configuration of at least one routing protocol used in the design and
- length of the video 6 - 10 minutes at max.
Please note that the video presentation in a group should have a precise classification of the parts of the presenting members, and the presenter face/ avatar should be shown in the video. You may use ZOOM software for making the video.
Marking criteria:
| Sections to be included in the report | Description of the section | Marks |
| Task 1 | Information Collection |
|
| Requirements Collection | Requirements collection from for Users, Devices, Application and Network. | 5 |
| The technique used for collecting requirements in Task 1 | Questionnaires are purposed and category. | 10 |
| Task 2 | Design and Implementation |
|
| Network Design & Subnetting | Include a diagram of your designed network, and write justifications of your design | 10 |
| Devices description and budget | Provided technical specification of the chosen devices (e.g., routers, switches, pc, wires etc.) and the cost | 5 |
| Devices configurations | A configuration such as WAN, VLAN, VLSM as per the requirements in Task 2 needs to be provided in the report | 8 |
| Task 3 | Video Demonstration |
|
| Implementation Demonstration | Video demonstration of the implementation of the network, routing and VLAN configuration | 10 |
| Reference style | Follow IEEE reference style | 2 |
|
| Total | 50 |
