Assignment brief:

This assessment is an individual report on the performance of a public limited company, selected by you, and is based on the published financial information submitted by the businesses at the end of each financial year. You should, a) Select a public limited company (domestic or international) as your research subject. Ensure that the chosen company is engaged in trading physical goods, not services b) Conduct ratio analysis on the business annual reports for the years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 and interpret the results. c) Submit your findings in a report with a maximum word limit of 1500 words, excluding references and appendices. The report must be submitted via on blackboard. The following structure is recommended for the assignment, with approximate word counts.

1. Provide a brief background history of the company chosen and its recent development including a brief overview of the brand/products/competitors. Most of this information will be available from publicly available information sources, such as company annual reports and websites. Make sure you do not simply cut and paste information into your assignment. If you do then your work may be penalised for plagiarism. You need to ensure that you fully reference and correctly cite all of the sources you refer to. The section should provide a summary of the companys current developments, written in your own words. Aim for this section to be around 300 words.

2. Conduct a ratio analysis and interpret the results: This section will be the main body of your assignment. You must analyse and interpret all the accounting ratios by comparing the current figures with the previous year ratios. You must include some analysis of the share prices over the two years. You must provide all the calculation in the appendix section of the report. You are expected to calculate a range of accounting ratios (4 categories) for the company for the years 2018-19 and 2019-20. Your analyses must be supported by relevant academic literature which must be referenced correctly. Make sure you get balance between describing the ratio and interpreting the results. Aim for this section to be around 950 words.

3. Conclusion and Recommendations: Using your analysis, make recommendations as to whether the company that you have analysed is worth investing in or not for investors. This should be based on your financial ratio analysis for the years 2018-19 and 2019-20. This should also include the recommendations for the company on how to improve their financial position. Aim for this section to be around 250 words.

Criteria Some points to start with, but not limited to.

Company Background -> A brief background of the company and its development - its establishment, expansion, key management personnel, activities of the company. The current size of the market, the prospects for future growth, challenges facing the industry, etc. Any major capital investments during its last three financial years and the major sources of funding for these investments.

Ratio Calculation -> Profitability, liquidity, efficiency ratios. All financial data, ratio formulas and calculations of ratios are to be shown clearly.

Ratio Interpretation -> A clear comparison of the financial position of the chosen company for the years 2018-19 and 2019-20. Recommendations for improvements and for the financial strengthening of the company.

Investment Recommendations -> A clear communication of investment decision based on the calculation.
