ASSIGNMENT PROJECT
Total marks =100
Units 1-5: Design of Structures II
Weight: ,70% of CM3(As per Learner/Programme Guide)
Criteria: GA1: Problem Solving: Apply engineering principles to systematically
diagnose and solve well-defined engineering problems.
Due date: 13 September 2024
Problems/Questions:
An architect produced drawings of a duplex building shown in Annexure A. Design the 1st
floor slab from Grid 3 to Grid 6 and beams 4 and 5 on Grid 4 and Grid 5 completely. Use the
dimensions as indicated on the architectural drawings.
Use grade 3019mm concrete for all designs.
Select your own exposure conditions and assume a 3-hour fire resistance requirement.
Assume the service stress in the reinforcement to be 200 MPa and the value of "E" for
concrete to be taken as 18000Nmm2 for deflection calculations.
The construction materials to be used must be selected from the applicable SANS codes.
Calculate the total load of the brick walls and convert that load to an area load for your
analysis.
Use 30 mm screed for your floor finish and make valid assumptions for all information not
given. Clearly state all assumptions.
Your design must include the design sheets provided, your hand and EXCEL design
calculations (your sheets and calculations must be neatly typed and not scanned).
You can copy your beam and slab design sheets to use for the design of multiple beams.
Produce complete bending schedules of your designs.
Compile all your information, design sheets, calculations and bending schedules into one .pdf
document to submit online.
The name convention of your .pdf document should be
"[YOUR_STUDENT_NOL_CDS22A_Project".
Submit your final design on ethuto as a single pdf file.

Grading System applicable to Assessment Rubric (included at end):
A minimum score of 2.5(50%) needs to be obtained for each Competency
Indicator/Associated Assessment Criteria (AAC) associated with the GA assessments. The
same grading system scores also apply to the General and Knowledge Area (KA)
assessments. The following scores apply:
5- The student clearly understands how to meet the competency indicator. Minor
mistakes and careless errors can appear insofar, as they do not indicate a conceptual
misunderstanding
4- The student understands the main concepts of the competency indicator, but has
some minor, yet non-trivial gaps in the reasoning.
3- The student understands the competency indicator and was able to fulfil the
requirements to pass the competency indicator.
2- The student has a poor understanding of the competency indicator. The student
may have gone in a not-entirely-wrong, but unproductive direction, or attempted to
solve the problem using pattern matching or by rote.
1- The student did not understand the competency indicator. The student may have
presented some appropriate information, but nothing further, or the student may have
done something entirely wrong.
0- The student provided nothing or almost nothing regarding the competency
indicator.
