Resume Tips and Instructions:

Your resume should be 1 to 2 pages.

Work Experience

Your resume and cover letters should change depending on the type of job you are applying for. If you are applying for an admin position you wouldn't really need to list your work as a babysitter when you were 16, or that you mow lawns in the summer.

You don't have to list every job you have ever had (for example, in the past 40 years, since the age of 16). If you have only just begun your working career then yes, this may be necessary.

If your resume is Chronological (includes dates), then please make sure the list goes from most recent to oldest. That includes dates for schooling, jobs, volunteer work, any certificates you have achieved, etc.

It is up to you whether or not you wish to add a job references section at the end of the resume.

If you have had 6 different jobs as a Server you don't need to list all 6 with the same responsibilities under each one. This is repetitive and not necessarily exciting to read. If this is the case with your job history, then consider using a Functional resume where you list a job (Server/Bartender) and then list the skills and responsibilities under it (not the 6 different locations where you worked AND the responsibilities). Another example would be if you were a Mechanic for 5 different dealerships, just use the heading of "Mechanic" and list your skills and responsibilities under it - all under one heading.

Education

List all education in chronological order from most recent to oldest.

You can certainly include your current education even if you have not yet graduated just state the month and year you begun and then currently enrolled next to the date or add the expected month and year if you know this info.

You do not need to include Middle School under your Education. Highschool should be the oldest item you include. If you have completed college or university previous, then you really do not need Highschool at all. Just include your post secondary education only.

Formatting

Margins depend on your resume template. You can change these in your template if you wish. You can get away with using more narrow margins if you need to, however make sure it still looks professional and you are not typing at the absolute edge of the margins.

Your headings should be a different font size (larger than your main document font size) and stand out. Possibly bolded or italicized, etc.

Dont bold or italics everything in your resume.

Use actual bullets when typing a list and never add a colon or a dot as a bullet. Use actual bullets in the bullet list under the Home tab in the Paragraph settings area.
