Assignment: Write a survey report on a particular area in Database technologies. Students are required to read a minimum of 5 papers, all of which are at least 4 pages long, in a chosen area. At least 3 out of the 5 papers must be within 5 years old. The papers must be picked from top database journals, such as TODS, TOIS and TKDE, and/or proceedings of top database conferences, such as SIGMOD, VLDB and ICDE. Instructor approval is required if a paper from a source other than listed above is to be used. A non-exhaustive list of suggested areas is given below: Active Databases . The survey report should be at least 4 pages long with one-inch margins, single spaced lines, and 12 point, Courier, Courier New, or Times New Roman fonts. Proper references should be used in the report. Grading Criteria: Quality of the survey report. (75 pts) The survey must allow a person to understand the particular area under investigation. After reading the survey report, a reader with a fair computer science background should get/understand: 1. a general overview of the area, 2. a number of achievements in the area, and 3. current issues and directions in the area. Some technical discussions are expected in the survey report so that intelligent work in the area can be appreciated. Planning and timely completion of bi-week progress milestones. (25 pts) The student submits a report for one paper every other week. The report should identify the following items in the reviewed paper. 1. The application area of the paper. 2. The problem that the paper tries to solve. 3. Existing solutions to the problem before the paper was published. 4. The paper's approach to solve the problem (the new idea) 5.
