Assume a band with a length equal to the distance around the earth (the earths great circle)
Question:
Assume a band with a length equal to the distance around the earth (the earths great circle) was wrapped snugly around the center of the earth. If I were to lengthen the band by 1 foot (and doing so would loosen the band so that the band is lifted off of the surface of the earth equally all around the earth), how high off the ground would the band be in inches and to the nearest tenth?
Problem 2:
Cans of vegetables are 12 fl oz and are 4.3 in tall. These cans are shipped to stores in boxes that perfectly fit 2 cans high, by 4 cans wide, and 5 cans deep. The store pays the shipping company $100 dollars per cubic meter of space that the box takes up. How much does one pack of vegetables cost to ship? How much of that cost is due to the empty space in the box (the spaces between the cans)? To the nearest cent.
