At $2$ pm$,$ ABC Hospitals risk manager called you to report an accidental fall that occurred on the sidewalk in front of the hospitals entrance this morning. An elderly gentleman was on his way in to visit his wife when he slipped on the slush that had yet to be removed from the sidewalk. He fell and landed on his right side, cracking his right elbow on the cement. An employee, on his way to work, assisted the gentleman to the emergency department for an examination. A full examination was performed on the patient, and x$-$rays of his ribs and right elbow were ordered. Two nondisplaced right rib fractures were identified; however, the elbow was not fractured. The ED physician gave the patient a mild pain reliever and encouraged deep breathing and limited movement. He was given instructions to return if breathing became difficult or the pain intensified. After hearing about the accident, the head ED nurse immediately notified the risk manager, who called you. He wants you to set in motion the health information management components of the organizations risk management plan under your purview when a situation like this arises.
