Question: b . A shallow square footing ( 4 m x 4 m ) is to be founded at a depth of 2 . 0 m

b. A shallow square footing (4 m x 4 m) is to be founded at a depth of 2.0 m in a deep deposit
of sandy clay as shown in Figure Q2b. The properties of the sandy clay are; c=20 kPa,
=35o,
b=18 kN/m3 and
sat =20 kN/m3. Groundwater table is temporary lowered for the
construction of the foundations and will revert permenantly to a depth of 1m below the
ground surface as shown in Figure Q2b. Design the footing to meet the requirements of
EC7, Combination 1 of Design Approach 1 if the footing supports a concrete column with
dimensions of 0.75m X 0.75m that carries a vertical permenant load of 2000 kN and
vertical variable load of 1500 kN. The point of application of all vertical loads is shifted
from the centre of the footing and found to be at a distance of 0.25 m from the centre of
the footing in both directions as shown in Figure Q2b. The bearing capacity factors are
determined and found to be Nc=46.13, Nq=33.3 and N=45.23.(Hint: you may assume
that the thickness of the footing is 1m. Any other required dimensions may be assumed)
