One thousand persons are surveyed to determine whether they have one or more pre-existing medical conditions. Results are presented in Table Q2.b. Condition(s) Number of persons Obesity 320 Hypertension 290 Type-II Diabetes 125 Both Obesity and Hypertension 160 Both Obesity and Type-II Diabetes 48 Both Type-II Diabetes and Hypertension 90 All three conditions 40 Table Q2.b: Survey of pre-existing conditions - non-exclusive counts i. A discrete random variable O is defined as the total number n of pre-existing conditions a specific individual reported during the survey. Develop the prob- ability mass function p(0), and determine P(O = 1), E(0) and V(O). ii. A continuous random variable N, is defined as the number of pre-existing medical conditions in an individual in the general population. The random variable N is modelled using a normal distribution with mean 0.8 and variance of 0.36. Estimate the probability that an individual in the general population has exactly 1 condition. Show your reasoning, and comment on the appro- priateness of the normal distribution model, and the probability estimate in the specified context.
