B310 Writing Assignment #1: Parenting Styles (25 points)
You will write responses to short answer questions to evaluate the parenting styles of a fictional parent from a book, movie, or TV show. You will use the information from your textbook (chapter 7) to help you determine the parenting styles of this parent. As part of this assignment, you must state what sort of style he/she uses or used by employing the vocabulary high, medium, low, Warmth, and Control. Next, you will include what effect you would predict his or her parenting style would have on his/her kids' development according to the information in the textbook. You will need to provide detailed examples of the parent's behavior and the children's behavior as evidence to back up your ideas.
What Do I Do First?
Choose a fictional parent from a book, movie, or TV show: choose ONLY one parent. This should be a character that you are familiar with, or one with whom you could easily become familiar. Choose a parent who clearly exhibits ONE parenting style: do not choose a parent who does not fit this profile or is unusual in some other way (a vampire, a murderer, a zombie, an animal). Please avoid parents who treat their child differently from a stepchild.
Look over the textbook material on parenting. Pay special attention to the descriptions of the different styles of parenting and the related levels of Warmth and Control. You will notice that:
Authoritative parents have High Warmth and Medium/Moderate/Fair Control
Authoritarian parents have Low Warmth and High Control
Indulgent-Permissive parents have High Warmth and Low Control
Indifferent-Uninvolved parents have Low Warmth and Low Control
Note:There is a problem in your textbook. Figure 7.2 is confusing and misleading.
First, the description of the chart says that it is comparing "warmth and control" but the figure reads "parental involvement" and "parental control". It also contains very misleading information that Authoritative parents are HIGH in control. This is not the case and the textbook body explains it better, "a fair degree of parental control."It is only Authoritarian parents who have High (unrealistic, unfair) control. You are expected to employ the words of the actual textbook chapter and NOT use the incorrect information in Figure 7.2 in this assignment.
Next, review the following information about citing in-text quotations in APA style:
Quotations are when you are using words, phrases, sentences, or parts of sentences that are written by somebody else. You must demonstrate who wrote these words and came up with these ideas. To do this, you need to enclose the quotation inside quotation marks then include inside of parentheses: the authors' last names in the order they appear on the source, the year of publication of the source, and the page number or numbers where the quotation is found. For example in this class the authors' names are Kail & Cavanaugh; the publication date is 2017, and you need to use information from various pages. Do not include other information about the authors, do not put the authors' names in alphabetical order or include their initials, and do not include the title of the source: that is not APA style. Follow these examples when you quote from a source.
Quote found on only one page of your textbook:
I would say that she is securely attached. This means, "The baby may or may not cry when the mother leaves, but when she returns, the baby wants to be with her and if the baby is crying it stops" (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2017, p.175).
Quote found stretching across two pages of your textbook:
Monozygotic twins should be the same since, "In other words, because identical twins are identical genetically, they should have virtually identical test scores, which would be a correlation of 1" (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2017, pp. 219-220).
Quote from the authors about other people's research findings found in your textbook:
"When teachers use few of these guidelines their students often fail or, at the very least, find learning difficult and school tedious" (Good & Brophy, 1994; Stevenson & Stigler, 1992; Walber, 1995 as cited in Kail & Cavanaugh, 2017, p. 241).

*Is my assignment in short answer format with my answers following the copied and pasted number and question?
*Did I use full, complete sentences for all of my answers?
*Did I proofread my paper to check for spelling or grammar errors?
*Usually you should avoid using the first-person (I, me) when you write formal papers. In this particular assignment, itisokay to use the first-person.
*Have I correctly used APA style to cite in-text quotations? Failure to do so is plagiarism.
*You do not need to have a list of references or sources at the end of this assignment.
WARNING: Every time you use someone else's ideas you must tell where you got that information. Every time you use someone else's words you must put them in quotation marks (" ") and say where you read or heard them. Failure to do this is plagiarism. Copying anything directly from the textbook, from another student, or off the Internet without proper citation, is cheating and plagiarism. Not saying that you got words or phrases from my lecture is plagiarism. Using ideas and just changing a word here or there; using ideas and just reordering the words are both examples of plagiarism. If you do not put quotations inside of quotations marks and cite where this quotation came from you will automatically lose 5 points of this 25 point assignment. If you have questions about how to avoid plagiarism please message me. I'd be happy to help.
