Groups and teams are similar to each other -- but certainly not the same. One way to distinguish between the two is to consider the extent to which the members of these "collections of individuals" operate independently or interdependently of each other. Our authors suggest that a group is a collection of individuals who attempt to accomplish common group goals by working primarily in an independent fashion, under the premise that the accomplishment of their individual efforts will result in the accomplishment of the group's goals. A team, on the other hand, is a collection of individuals who work interdependently and collaboratively to accomplish its goals, under the premise that by doing so a synergistic (and therefore a more effective) result will occur.
Another way to distinguish between a group and a team relates to the maturity level and potential effectiveness of these collections of individuals. According to this scheme, a group consists of two or more individuals who are psychology aware of each other and who have come together in the attempt to accomplish one or more common goals. When this group of individuals has matured to the point where it is accomplishing its stated goals, then it is called a "team." A team, therefore, is simply an effective group. It is typically highly cohesive and is characterized by a sense of mutual accountability among its members and by a high degree of trust among them -- which, of course, contributes to its success in accomplishing its objectives.
By the way, one more term merits brief discussion here -- and that is the definition of a "crowd." I would suggest that a crowd is simply two or more individuals who are in the same location at the same time. The individuals in the crowd may or may not share any common goals.
